Undergraduate Admission Essays

When writing a good undergraduate essay keep in mind that a good essay is not good because of the topic but because of the voice. Good writers make even the most uninteresting topics of interest, while a weak writer will make the most dramatic theme completely boring. Experts say that students struggle to recall the difference between two simple concepts – showing and telling. Specifically a good essay will always show the reader a concept or idea, where as a weak essay simply lists the facts.

By showing, a essay appeals to all of our senses, not simply the visual. To show means to provide an explosion for the senses; for the eyes, ears and, depending on the essay, the mouth, nose or skin.
