Discrimination and prejudice were very common acts during the time that To Kill A Mockingbird took place. Prejudice in this book is displayed by the acts of hate and misunderstanding because of someone's color. For example when Tom Robinson was on trial for rape that everyone knew he didn’t commit, but because of the color they still want to put him in jail. During this time in the southern states, black people had to use separate bathrooms, drinking fountains, sections in restaurants, churches, sit in separate places, and even go to separate schools. An example in this book that shows that they sat in different places was in the court room the colored sections had to sit up in the balconies. Even though a lot of the discrimination was towards blacks, there was also discrimination towards families that did not have money, such as the Ewell family.
Leading up to the Earthquake, foreshocks occurred in San Francisco, California of April 18, 1906. It was caused by the San Andreas Fault as a strike-slip fault that happened at 5:12 am. Nature Of Logic And Perception Critical thinking is the ability to be in control of one’s thinking. It includes the ability to knowingly examine the elements of one’s reasoning, or that of another, and evaluate that reasoning against common or universal intellectual standards - clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, and logic. It also involves the structured examination of sources of information to determine his validity. Logic is emphasized by the critical thinking process as it requires questioning of assumptions and therefore it can challenge our normal biases and prejudices, and often change our thoughts about something that we originally perceived to be one what but actually turned out completely different. When trying to understand the nature of logic as it relates to the critical thinking process it seems that your first goal should be to find the truth. Some truths are obvious, and other are difficult to acquire. Some judgments we make are simple; some judgments are complicated. Some arguments, whether made by us or others, may be straightforward and easily understood; other arguments may be complex and consist of a series of smaller arguments, each needing to be critically examined and evaluated. Critical thinking involves knowledge of the science of logic, including the skills of logical analysis, correct reasoning and also an understanding of statistical methods. Critical thinking however involves more than just an understanding of logical procedures in our thought processes. A good critical thinker must also understand the source and nature of knowledge and the nature of truth.
Issue Assignment #2: Should illegal/undocumented immigrants be granted amnesty? Yes, illegal/undocumented immigrants should be granted amnesty. 1. Illegal immigrants allow some business owners to hire them as low wage demanding workers. Some agencies, such as Bear Stearns, believe the estimated number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. is around 20 million. With this many illegal immigrants searching for jobs they often resort to low paying, and less skilled jobs that other Americans do not want. Also, the wages received by these immigrants are being taxed by the state and feds.
The meaning of life in my eyes is to be a matchmaker. It might sound funny to say that to most people but its true. What I mean is that the goal in life is to make new life. Being a matchmaker is not always that easy but if it’s perfected, can result in happiness or even the ability to create a baby. The start of this whole process begins with two separate individuals. One of them being the sperm, and the other is the egg.
Trans Fats What are trans fats? The trans fatty acids are also known as trans fats which are a similar form of unsaturated fats. Trans fats are found mostly in fast food products meat and dairy products. It is something that the body can be hurt by if consuming large amounts on a daily basis but, if you consume very small portions once in a while your body can not be harmed by the trans fats. The government has also stated that trans fats should be kept to a minimum within a persons diet. There is no guide to how much should be consumed but it should be kept to a small amount. A few years ago the Food and Administration (FDA) began making the fast food restaurants include a label on all products or making it available for the customer to view via Internet or the restaurants started to keep information pamphlets including all the products sold within the restaurant they had to include the percentage of the daily value per serving. With the FDA approving this issue, it also helps customers aware of all the artificial ingredients in the products. When a consumer is more knowledgeable what they consume, they see that the unsaturated fats and saturated do not add up to the total amount of fat that is listed in the information label. It is now known that there are some types of excess fat which are the trans fats but the fast food companies are not required to list either if they do not want to. If someone has no knowledge that they are consuming this type of fat it is considered to be a secret fat.
Martial artists excel in body dynamics beyond an “ordinary” person for several reasons. Karate-ka (karate students) study hand to hand combat in the same essence as a college student studies any degree major. Through years of studying, a history student may be considered “advanced” in their knowledge of history; and an “ordinary” person could not begin to compare the world’s timeline with the history student. In karate, there is the same principle with a different field of expertise. Karate-ka become one with their mind, body, and spirit allowing them to use any part of their body as a “useful” weapon. This happens through endless hours of training and practicing hand to hand combat techniques.
When a cell phone goes off in a classroom or at a concert, we are irritated, but at least our lives are on the road, however, irresponsible cell phone users are more than irritating: They are putting our lives at risk. Many of us have witnessed drivers so distracted by dialing and chatting that they resemble drunk drivers, weaving between lanes, for example, or nearly running down pedestrians in crosswalks. A number of bills to regulate use of cell phones on the road have been introduced in state legislatures, and the time has come to push for their passage. Regulation is needed because drivers using phones are seriously impaired and because laws on negligent and reckless driving are not sufficient to punish offenders.
Dr. Virginia Jeronimus CJAD 101 L. Diaz 30 August 2008 Discuss the historical development of American Policing The development of law enforcement in colonial America was similar to that of England during the same time period. Law enforcement in colonial America was considered a local responsibility. As in England, the colonies established a system of night watch to guard cities against fire, crime, and disorder. In addition to night watch systems, there were sheriffs appointed by the governor and constables elected by the people. These individuals were responsible for maintaining order and providing other services. Nalla and Newman have described the following problems plaguing colonial cities that were considered the responsibility of police: controlling slaves and Indians; maintaining order; regulating specialized functions such as selling in the market and delivering goods; maintaining health and sanitation; managing pests and other animals; ensuring the orderly use of vehicles; controlling liquor, gambling, vice, and weapons; and keeping watch for fires.
