Using Axia’s Education Resources

The student website is set up to make it so that it is user friendly, this gives the student may tools and resources. These resources will be used the whole time he or she is a college student. Make sure you keep your Individual Record Number (IRN) close at hand. The student will need this anytime he or she talks with any of his or her advisers or tech support. Check ones school email every time he or she logs into the Axia student site. Other resources that are available to a student through the website are the Center for Writing Excellence and the Center for Math Excellence, both of these can be found in the school library. In the library there are a list of workshops and the dates they will be scheduled. The student website also has links to outside resources that are helpful in distance learning, like language programs, Dell and Microsoft discounts.

Upholding Academic Honesty
Academic honesty is not hard to up hold as long as he or she does not practice plagiarism. Make sure he or she submits his or her own work and he or she will not have to worry about plagiarism. If you need to use something that someone else has written make sure that one sites all sources and references. This will help one to avoid any risk of plagiarism. If he or she is not sure about anything he or she has written it is always a good idea to run it through the plagiarism checker that can be found in the library under the CWE. When he or she cites a resource makes sure he or she does it in the way his or her instructor prefers.

Setting and Achieving Goals
It is easy to set goals, but it is not so when it comes to keeping them. When setting short and long term goals he or she wants to make them realistic. If he or she sets them to high and fails he or she could become depressed and not want to try. Try to set goals that he or she know he or she will be able to achieve, but he or she also wants to make them challenging. Meeting these goals will be more rewarding. Set short term goals that he or she can reach within a week to a month. Median term goals should be set so he or she is able to meet these goals start with short term goals that are reachable. Get a large calendar so these goals can be given a date to achieve them by. This also lets one know on a daily bases what needs to be done to reach his or her goals. Next go to the median goals; also write these on the calendar. Setting long term goals on a calendar can be a little difficult. I would suggest getting a brightly colored post it notes. Write long term goals on these and post them somewhere one will be able to see each day. Once he or she gets close to these goals mark them on the calendar. Always make sure that the goals one set are realistic and attainable. This will make meeting these goals even more rewarding. Do not be disappointed if one does not meet his or her goals, just rethink them. This way when he or she does not meet them, he or she will have a better idea of how to set your goals so they are attainable.

Managing Time Wisely
Time management does not have o be difficult. Scheduling is the biggest key to time management. Work, family, housework, and school can be tough to handle. If he or she keeps to a schedule these will not me hard to reach. Start out with what one knows his or her schedule. This is the easiest; ones work schedule usually stays the same. Next schedule family events, one’s children’s school events. This can be done on a monthly or weekly base whichever is easiest for him or her. Household chores can be done on a weekly base. Taking out the garbage, cutting the grass, changing the cat box, all can be done once a week on a certain day. Dusting, vacuuming, dishes preparing dinner are all daily chores. If you do not get around to dusting or vacuuming they can wait till the next day. Always schedule time each day to work on school work. This way one knows what is happening and one will be able to handle any surprises that might spring up.

Fostering Reading Comprehension and Retention
When one has reading to do find a place you can concentrate and have a quiet place to be able to comprehend what you read. Make yourself comfortable and get ready to utilize the SAQ3R. When one starts to read and assignment take it one paragraph at a time and make sure he or she comprehends the paragraph before he or she moves on to the next one. Question what you have read, write down anything he or she feels is an important note that he or she will want to review. Summarize the paragraph and recite it to oneself. This way one will be able to commit what you have read to memory.

Applying Personality and Learning Styles
Everyone has a different learning style, just as everyone has a different personality. Some of us are visual learners, while some are auditory learners. Yet others use all of their sense so they are able to comprehend and retain the information. Knowing his or her learning style is important to all students. This can make or break ones academic career. He or she is the one who is responsible for their own success. If someone is unsure of an assignment ask for help. The instructor does not know if one is having trouble or not. Get to know the other students in the class. You are all there for the same reason, to get and education. When working with others, figure out what their learning style is, this will help you to strengthen your weaker intelligence. Most important thing of all to remember always be honest and true to yourself.
