9th Grader’s Musical Journey: From Notes to Self-Discovery

When I signed up for music class this year, I thought it would just be a fun break from all the “serious” subjects. Little did I know that it would become one of the most impactful and eye-opening experiences of my high school journey so far. This year in music has been about so much more than just learning notes and rhythms – it’s been a journey of self-discovery, cultural exploration, and personal growth.

We started the year by exploring the basic elements of music – rhythm, melody, harmony, and form. I’ve always enjoyed music, but learning about these components helped me appreciate it on a whole new level. Now, when I listen to my favorite songs, I find myself paying attention to the intricate layering of sounds and the structure of the pieces. It’s like I’ve been given a secret code to unlock a deeper understanding of the music I love.

One of the most surprising things I learned was how much math is involved in music. We studied the ratios of frequencies that make up different intervals and chords. It was mind-blowing to see how the math I learn in another class directly applies to creating beautiful sounds. This connection between subjects made me realize how interconnected all our learning really is.

Our teacher introduced us to a wide variety of musical genres and styles from around the world. We listened to everything from classical symphonies to jazz, from traditional African drumming to K-pop. This exposure to different musical traditions wasn’t just about appreciating diverse sounds – it was a window into different cultures and histories. Learning about the origins of blues and jazz, for example, taught me so much about African American history and the power of music as a form of expression and resistance.

One of my favorite units was on film scoring. We analyzed how music is used in movies to create mood and enhance storytelling. Now, whenever I watch a film, I pay close attention to the soundtrack and how it’s influencing my emotional response to the scenes. I even tried my hand at composing a short piece to accompany a scene from my favorite movie. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the artistry involved in film production.

Throughout the year, we had the opportunity to learn and play various instruments. I’ve played piano for a few years, but I got to try my hand at guitar, drums, and even some traditional instruments from other cultures like the djembe and ukulele. Learning these instruments wasn’t just about making music – it taught me valuable lessons about persistence and the importance of practice. There were many frustrating moments when my fingers just wouldn’t cooperate, but the feeling of finally nailing a difficult passage was incredibly rewarding.

One of the most challenging but rewarding aspects of the class was our group performances. We formed small ensembles and had to work together to arrange and perform pieces. It wasn’t always easy – there were disagreements about artistic choices and struggles to coordinate our parts. But these experiences taught me so much about teamwork, communication, and compromise. I learned how to give and receive constructive criticism and how to blend my individual sound with others to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

We also delved into music theory, which I initially found daunting. Learning about chord progressions, scales, and key signatures felt a bit like learning a new language at first. But as I started to understand these concepts, I realized how they provide a framework for creativity. It’s like knowing the rules of grammar when you’re writing – once you understand them, you can use them as tools for expression rather than limitations.

One of the most impactful projects we did was researching the role of music in social movements. We looked at how songs have been used throughout history to inspire change, unite people, and spread messages of hope and resistance. From civil rights anthems to anti-war songs, it was powerful to see how music has been a driving force in shaping our world. It made me think about the music of our own time and what it says about the issues we face today.

Our teacher also encouraged us to explore the connection between music and emotions. We kept listening journals where we reflected on how different pieces made us feel and why. This exercise not only helped me become more in tune with my own emotions but also made me more empathetic. Understanding how music can evoke such a wide range of feelings has helped me better understand and connect with others.

Technology played a big role in our class too. We learned about digital music production, using software to create and edit music. It was fascinating to see how technology has transformed the music industry and opened up new possibilities for creativity. We even had a unit on AI in music, discussing the ethical implications of computer-generated compositions. It sparked some intense debates about the nature of creativity and the role of human emotion in art.

One of the most fun aspects of the class was our exploration of the physics of sound. We did experiments to visualize sound waves and learned about acoustics. Understanding the science behind music added another layer to my appreciation. Now, when I’m in different spaces – from our school auditorium to a massive concert hall – I think about how the physical environment is shaping the sound I’m hearing.

Perhaps the most unexpected impact of this class has been on my self-confidence. Performing in front of others was terrifying at first, but as the year progressed, I became more comfortable sharing my music. This newfound confidence has spilled over into other areas of my life – I find myself more willing to speak up in other classes and take on leadership roles in group projects.

The class also opened my eyes to potential career paths I had never considered before. We had guest speakers from various music-related professions – sound engineers, music therapists, composers for video games. It made me realize that there are so many ways to incorporate my love of music into a future career.

As the year comes to a close, I find myself profoundly grateful for this music class. It’s been so much more than just learning about notes and instruments. It’s taught me about history, culture, physics, technology, and myself. Music has become a lens through which I view and understand the world around me.

Most importantly, this class has instilled in me a lifelong love and appreciation for music in all its forms. Whether I pursue music professionally or keep it as a passionate hobby, I know that the skills and perspectives I’ve gained will enrich my life for years to come. Music is no longer just something I listen to – it’s a way of thinking, feeling, and connecting with the world and people around me. As I move forward in my high school journey and beyond, I’ll carry the rhythms, melodies, and lessons from this class with me, using them to create harmony in all aspects of my life.
